Dhananjaya Chandrachud was born into the Chandrachud family on November 11, 1959, in Bombay, Bombay State, India (present-day Mumbai, Maharashtra). He is 64 years old as of 2024.

His father, Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, holds the record for being the longest-serving Chief Justice of India, while his mother, Prabha, was a classical musician who performed for All India Radio.

He then earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Delhi’s Faculty of Law in 1982 and went on to complete a Master of Laws degree at Harvard Law School in 1983.

Career Journey Of D Y Chandrachud

Chandrachud studied law at Delhi University in 1982, a period when there were not many job opportunities for new law graduates. He started his career as a junior advocate, helping lawyers and judges, and even drafted some legal briefs for Fali Nariman.

After finishing his studies at Harvard, he began working at the law firm Sullivan and Cromwell. He became a judge at the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000, and worked there until he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

While at the Bombay High Court, he also served as the Director of the Maharashtra Judicial Academy. He was the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013, until he joined the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016.

On October 17, 2022, he was chosen to be the future Chief Justice of India. After the previous Chief Justice, Uday Umesh Lalit, retired, he officially took the oath of office as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022.

He has taught at several universities, including the Australian National University, Deakin University, Melbourne Law School, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

He serves as the Patron-in-Chief of the National Legal Services Authority and is also the Chancellor of the National Law School of India University.

He has been part of important court decisions, including those about political funding, the Ram Temple issue, privacy rights, and the Sabarimala temple case, as well as the case regarding the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

He has also taught at various universities, including those in Mumbai, Oklahoma, Harvard, and Yale.
