Cricketing Journey Of Farokh Engineer

Engineer made his Test debut on December 1, 1961, during a match between India and England at the Modi Stadium in Kanpur. This was the second Test of the 1961/62 series, following a drawn match three weeks earlier.

India, led by captain Nari Contractor, won the toss and chose to bat first. Engineer came to bat as the ninth player when the team’s score was 414 for 7, joining Polly Umrigar at the crease.

Engineer played a total of 46 Test matches for India between 1961/62 and 1974/75. He also participated in five One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the 1974/75 season.

In Test matches, he scored 2,611 runs, which included two centuries, with his highest score being 121. Additionally, he made 66 catches and completed 16 stumpings as a wicket-keeper.

While playing for Lancashire in 1970, Engineer was chosen as the wicket-keeper for the Rest of the World team, which was captained by Garfield Sobers.

This team played five unofficial Test matches against England during that summer. In later years, Engineer became the vice president of his cricket club.

On January 24, 2024, during the Naman Awards ceremony, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that he and Ravi Shastri were honored with the Colonel C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
