Gauri Lankesh was an Indian activist and journalist from Bangalore, Karnataka. She served as the editor of Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada weekly that was started by her father, P. Lankesh. Gauri also published her own weekly magazine called Gauri Lankesh Patrike.

Gauri Lankesh was born on 29 January 1962 in Bangalore, Mysore State, India. She died on 5 September 2017. She was 55 years old when she died. She was born into a Kannada Lingayat family.

Her father, P. Lankesh, was a poet and journalist who founded the Kannada-language weekly tabloid Lankesh Patrike. Her mother’s name was Indira Lankesh. Gauri had two siblings: a sister named Kavitha and a brother named Indrajit.

Gauri divorced Chidanand Rajghatta after five years of marriage and didn’t have any children, she viewed activists Jignesh Mevani, Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, and Shehla Rashid Shora as her “adopted children” in a metaphorical sense.

She was a well-educated social activist who completed her graduation at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, and Central College, Bangalore.

Career Journey Of Gauri Lankesh

Gauri Lankesh began her journalism career at The Times of India in Bangalore. She later moved to Delhi with her husband, Chidanand Rajghatta, but soon returned to Bangalore, where she worked as a correspondent for Sunday magazine for nine years.

When her father passed away in 2000, she was working for Eenadu’s Telugu television channel in Delhi. By then, she had been a journalist for 16 years.

Gauri was a strong critic of right-wing Hindutva politics. In 2003, she spoke out against the Sangh Parivar’s attempts to promote Hinduism at the Sufi shrine Guru Dattatreya Baba Budan Dargah in Baba Budan Giri.

She was an advocate for press freedom. She wrote about the misconduct of D. K. Shivakumar, an Indian National Congress leader and a close associate of former Karnataka Chief Minister S. M. Krishna.

She was openly critical of the caste system. In 2015, some Brahmins accused her of criticizing the novelist S. L. Bhyrappa and Brahminism during the 81st Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, a Kannada literary conference held in Shravanabelagola.

On January 23, 2008, She published an article in her newspaper titled “Darodegilada BJP galu.” In this article, she criticized BJP leaders Pralhad Joshi, Umesh Dushi, Shivanand Bhat, and Venkatesh Mestry.
