This victory made him the 18th World Chess Champion and the youngest to win the title at 18 years and 195 days old.

His mother, Padmavathi Dommaraju, is a microbiologist, and his father, Rajinikanth Dommaraju, is an ENT surgeon who moved to Chennai for his medical career.

His grandfather, Shankar Raju, was born and grew up in a village called Chenchuraju Kandriga. He worked for the Indian Railways and now lives in Chenchuraju Kandriga, where the family still owns the property.

Career Journey Of Gukesh Dommaraju

Gukesh started learning chess at the age of seven in 2013, with regular one-hour sessions three times a week. He left school after Class 4 to focus on chess. In 2017, his father quit his job to travel with him to tournaments, and family and friends supported them financially.

His exceptional talent was noticed early, and he benefited from India’s strong chess system. Gukesh won the Asian School Chess Championship under the category in 2015. In 2018, he became the World Youth Chess Champion in the under-12 category.

That same year, he won five gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championship in under-12 events, including rapid, blitz, classical, and team formats. He earned the International Master title in March 2017 at the 34th Cappelle-la-Grande Open.

On January 15, 2019, Gukesh became the second-youngest chess grandmaster ever at 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, just behind Sergey Karjakin. In June 2021, he won the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour, Gelfand Challenge, with 14 out of 19 points.

In August 2022, Gukesh won the individual gold medal on the top board at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, scoring 9 out of 11 points.

In October 2022, he became the youngest player to defeat World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen during the Aimchess Rapid tournament. By August 2023, Gukesh became the youngest player to achieve a chess rating of 2750.

In December 2023, Gukesh qualified for the 2024 Candidates Tournament to decide who would challenge Ding Liren for the World Chess Championship.

In September 2024, he played for India in the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, stayed undefeated, and won an individual gold medal with 9 points in 10 rounds.

The 2024 World Chess Championship took place in November-December between Gukesh and Ding Liren. In 14 matches, Gukesh won 3 games, Ding won 2, and 8 ended in draws.

On December 12, 2024, Gukesh won the final match, securing the championship with a score of 7½–6½. The win made He the youngest World Chess Champion.

He plays a defensive style and is great at calculating moves under time pressure, which often leads to his games becoming complex and tactical.
