He stepped into this role after the CBI chief, Alok Verma, and his deputy, Rakesh Asthana, were put on leave due to a dispute between them. The appointments committee, led by the Prime Minister, officially assigned Nageshwar Rao, who was a joint director at the CBI, to this position effective immediately.
Nageshwar Rao’s first job was as a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Talcher, Odisha, during 1989-90, where he showed his strong leadership skills. He later served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in four districts of Odisha: Mayurbhanj, Nabarangapur, Bargarh, and Jagatsinghpur.
He also held the position of SP for Railways in Rourkela and Cuttack, as well as SP for the Crime Branch. Rao was the first officer in Odisha to use DNA fingerprinting in a crime investigation when he worked on a ra** case in Jagatsinghpur district in 1996.
While he was the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Crime Branch, he played a key role in convicting Belu Das, who was involved in the 1991 Hooch tragedy that resulted in the deaths of over 200 people in Cuttack.
Rao has experience in anti-insurgency operations. He served as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Operations for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Manipur.
