Justice Sanjiv Khanna became the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu led the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna will hold the position for just over six months and will step down on May 13, 2025.
He takes over from Justice D Y Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday after reaching the age limit of 65 years.

Career Journey Of Judge of the Supreme Court of India Sanjiv Khanna
Sanjiv Khanna became an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. On June 24, 2005, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and was made a permanent judge on February 20, 2006. He became a judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 18, 2019.
Sanjiv Khanna is set to become the next Chief Justice of India, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud.
He is also the nephew of Justice Hans Raj Khanna, a former Supreme Court judge known for establishing the basic structure doctrine in 1973.
Justice Hans Raj Khanna is famous for his dissenting opinion in the 1976 Habeas Corpus case (ADM Jabalpur v. Shiv Kant Shukla).
He was overlooked for the Chief Justice position by M. H. Beg, following Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s influence, which led him to resign from the court in early 1977.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has suggested Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor for the position of Chief Justice of India.
Once approved by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice and serve for six months before retiring on May 13, 2025.
Chief Justice Chandrachud will retire next month, on November 10. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.
