Sharda Sinha is an Indian folk and classical singer from Bihar. She mainly sings in the Maithili and Bhojpuri languages and is known as “Bihar Kokila,” which means the cuckoo of Bihar.

Sharda Sinha was born on October 1, 1952, in Hulas, which is in the Supaul district of Bihar. She is 72 years old as of 2024. She was born to Indian parents, her father’s name is Late Parmeshwar Dayal Singh and her mother’s name is Maai Singh. She also had a brother named Akouri Badri Nath Sinha.

She is married to Brajkishore Sinha. Sadly, Sinha’s husband, Braj Kishore, died in September at the age of 80 after suffering a brain hemorrhage. They had been married for 54 years. She has two children named Anshuman and Vandana.

Career Journey Of Sharda Sinha

Sharda Sinha began her career by singing Maithili folk songs. She sings in several languages, including Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi, and Hindi. Sinha performed at the Bihar Utsav in 2010 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

At the Basant Mahotsava organized by Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad, she performed many songs celebrating the arrival of spring, telling the story of the season through folk music.

She also sang the song “Kahe Toh Se Sajna” in the popular movie Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), as well as “Taar Bijli” from the Bollywood film Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2 and “Kaun Si Nagaria” from Chaarfutiya Chhokare.

Sharda, a folk singer known for her association with Chhath, released two new Chhath songs in 2016 after not having new music for ten years. Her last album of devotional songs came out in 2006. Sharda’s last album about Chhath, called Arag, contains eight songs. 

She has sung many regional songs, including “Vivah Geet” and “Chhath Geet.” In 1991, she was honored with the Padma Shri award for her contributions to music. 

Then, on the eve of Republic Day in 2018, she received the Padma Bhushan, which is India’s third-highest civilian award. Throughout her career, she has sung a total of 62 Chhath songs across nine albums released by T-Series, HMV, and Tips.
