About Sheetal Devi Archer’s Biography
Sheetal Devi was born on January 10, 2007, in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. She was born with a rare condition called phocomelia, which means she was born without arms. Sheetal’s father, Mann Singh, is a farmer, and her mother, Shakti Devi, is a goatherd.
She has a sister named Shivani. Sheetal is in a relationship with Matt Stutzman, an American archer who was born without arms. Stutzman has helped her improve her archery skills.

In 2019, Sheetal participated in a youth event in Kishtwar, where the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit discovered her. They helped with her education and provided medical support, enabling her to follow her dreams.
Brief About Sheetal’s Career Journey
At a youth event organized by the Indian Army, coaches Abhilasha Chaudhary and Kuldeep Wadhwan noticed Sheetal’s confidence and chose to train her. They initially thought about using prosthetics to help her, but doctors said it wouldn’t be possible in her case. The coaches had never trained anyone without arms in archery before.
After learning about Matt Stutzman, who uses his legs for archery, they started Sheetal’s training. Within 11 months, she competed in the women’s compound bow event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, winning two gold medals for India—one in mixed doubles and one in the women’s individual event.
She also earned a silver medal in the women’s double compound event, which placed her at the top of the para-world archery rankings in the women’s compound open category.
On January 9, 2024, Sheetal Devi was awarded the Arjuna Award 2023 by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She also became the youngest athlete to compete in women’s para archery at the 2024 Summer Paralympics.
Although Sheetal Devi was eliminated by just 1 point in the 1/8 elimination round, she bounced back and won a bronze medal in the mixed team compound open category with Rakesh Kumar at the 2024 Summer Paralympics.
