Nambori Thakur Tilak Varma is an Indian cricketer who bats left-handed and bowls off-spin occasionally. He made his international debut for India on August 3, 2023, in a T20I match against the West Indies. He plays domestic cricket for Hyderabad and is a part of the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL. He was also part of the Indian team that won the 2023 Asia Cup.

Tilak Varma was born on November 8, 2002, into a Telugu Hindu family in Hyderabad. His father, Namboori Nagaraju, was an electrician, and his mother, Gayatri Devi, is a housewife. He has an older brother named Tarun Varma. Varma showed an early passion for cricket and was noticed by coach Salim Bayash while playing tennis ball cricket at age 11.

Domestic career:-

Varma made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy on December 30, 2018, scoring 215 runs in seven matches with a strike rate of 147.26. He also debuted in Twenty20 cricket for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on February 28, 2019. 

Varma made his List A debut for Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on September 28, 2019. In December 2019, he was selected for India’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. During the 2021-22 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 180 runs in five matches and took four wickets.

IPL – Indian Premier League

In February 2022, Tilak was purchased by the Mumbai Indians during the IPL auction. His base price was ₹20 lakh, but he was bought for ₹1.7 crore. In April 2023, Tilak Varma scored 84 runs off 46 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first match of the IPL. In a playoff game against Gujarat Titans, he scored 43 runs off just 14 balls.

International Career

In July 2023, Tilak received his first call-up to the Indian cricket team for the T20I series against the West Indies. He made his T20I debut on August 3, 2023, in the first match of the series. On August 6, 2023, Varma scored his first fifty in international cricket during the second T20 match against the West Indies.

He became the second youngest Indian to achieve this milestone in Men’s T20Is, after Rohit Sharma. Varma has been included in the Indian teams for the three T20I matches in Ireland and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. He also made his ODI debut on September 15, 2023, against Bangladesh during the Asia Cup.
