Vijay Bhausaheb Thorat, commonly known as Balasaheb Thorat, is an Indian politician from Maharashtra. He has held important roles, including being the state’s Revenue Minister and serving as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Thorat completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Fergusson College, Pune University, in 1975. He then went on to earn his law degree (LLB) from ILS Law College, Pune, in 1977.

Political Journey Of Balasaheb Thorat

Thorat started his political career as an Independent candidate and ran for the Sangamner Assembly seat, winning by 10,159 votes against Shakuntala Khanderao Horat.

After that, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and went on to win eight more assembly elections without a single loss.

Thorat first served as the Minister of State for Agriculture in Vilasrao Deshmukh’s government. Then, in 2004, he was promoted to Cabinet Minister, alongside Anil Deshmukh from the NCP.

In 2019, Thorat became the head of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) after Ashok Chavan stepped down due to the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

Under Thorat’s leadership, the party increased its seats in the Maharashtra Assembly from 31 to 44.

During the political shifts in Maharashtra that year, Congress joined with the NCP and Shiv Sena to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, and Thorat became a minister in Uddhav Thackeray’s government. In 2023, he resigned as the Congress leader in the Legislature.
