Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna was born on 1 May 1932, Somanahalli, Maddur Taluk of Mandya district, Karnataka. He was 92 years old as of 2024. Krishna passed away on December 10, 2024, at the age of 92, at his home in Bengaluru after a long illness.

He will be cremated on December 11 in his hometown, Mandya, following Vokkaliga traditions, with full state honors. The Karnataka government has declared three days of mourning in his honor.

He was born to Indian parents, his father’s name was Mr. S.C. Mallaiah and his mother’s name was Mrs. Shrimati Thayamma.

S. M. Krishna was married to Prema Krishna, and they had two daughters. One of his daughters, Malavika Krishna, was married to the late V. G. Siddhartha, the founder of Café Coffee Day.

Krishna also had a younger brother, Shankar, who was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council and passed away in 2019. Krishna completed his high school education at Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala in Mysore.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharaja’s College, Mysore, and a law degree from Government Law College in Bangalore (now University Law College).

He then went to the United States to study law, earning a Master of Laws degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Political Journey Of SM Krishna

S. M. Krishna began his political career in 1962 by winning the Maddur Assembly seat as an independent candidate. He defeated K. V. Shankar Gowda, a well-known Congress politician for whom Jawaharlal Nehru had campaigned.

Afterward, S. M. Krishna joined the Praja Socialist Party but lost the 1967 election for the Maddur seat to M. M. Gowda from the Congress. However, in 1968, he won a by-election for the Mandya Lok Sabha seat when the sitting MP passed away, defeating the Congress candidate.

S. M. Krishna returned to the Lok Sabha in 1980 and served as a minister under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1983 to 1984. Later, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1996 to 1999.

In 1999, as the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, he led the party to victory in the state assembly elections and became the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Krishna was appointed the Governor of Maharashtra in December 2004 and served until he resigned on March 5, 2008.

He then resigned as the External Affairs Minister on October 26, 2012, signaling his return to Karnataka state politics. In January 2023, he announced his retirement from politics, citing age-related reasons.
