Business Career Of Byju Raveendran

Raveendran finished his B.Tech degree at the Government College of Engineering in Kannur. After that, he worked as a service engineer for a multinational shipping company. In 2003, during a vacation, he helped some of his friends prepare for the CAT exam.

He took the CAT exam and scored a perfect 100th percentile—not just once but twice. In 2007, he started Byju’s Classes, a test preparation business that became so popular it drew stadium-sized crowds.

In 2011, he officially founded Byju’s as a company with his wife, Divya Gokulnath, who had been one of his students in his coaching classes. In 2015, as smartphone screens got bigger, Byju’s created an app to help students learn directly on their phones.

By October 2018, the app had expanded to countries like the UK, the US, and other places where English is widely spoken. As of 2020, Forbes estimated that Byju Raveendran, his wife Divya Gokulnath, and his brother Riju Raveendran together had a net worth of $3.4 billion.

In April 2021, Byju’s bought Aakash Educational Services, an Indian test-prep company, for almost $1 billion. On February 1, 2024, some of BYJU’S shareholders called for a general meeting to discuss various concerns about the company.

They also requested changes to the board of directors and leadership team. On February 23, shareholders voted to remove Byju Raveendran as CEO. However, Byju said the vote was not valid because not enough people participated in the meeting to meet the required quorum.
