Brief About Kamindu’s Cricket Career

Kamindu Mendis began bowling with both hands when he was 13, while playing cricket for Richmond College in Galle. He made his List A debut with Charith Asalanka on November 30, 2015, during the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament. In the following month, Kamindu Mendis was selected for Sri Lanka’s squad in the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

In December 2016, he was appointed as the captain of the Under-19 team. He was also part of Colombo’s squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament and the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament. Kamindu made his Twenty20 debut for Colombo on August 21, 2018.

Mendis played his first-class cricket match for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club on November 30, 2018, in the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament. In July 2022, he was picked by the Kandy Falcons to play in the third season of the Lanka Premier League.

International Cricket Career

In October 2018, Kamindu Mendis was selected for Sri Lanka’s T20 International (T20I) team for a match against England. He made his T20I debut on 27 October 2018. Then, in February 2019, he was included in Sri Lanka’s One Day International (ODI) squad for a series against South Africa. He played his first ODI on 10 March 2019 against South Africa.

In September 2021, Kamindu Mendis was included in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In January 2022, he was also named in Sri Lanka’s ODI team for their series against Zimbabwe. In May 2024, Kamindu Mendis was selected to be part of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

In May 2022, Kamindu Mendis was selected for Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the series against Bangladesh. He made his Test debut on July 8, 2022, against Australia. In a match against New Zealand in Galle, Mendis scored his fourth century and built important partnerships—72 runs with Angelo Mathews and 103 runs with Kusal Mendis.
