Krishnakumar Kunnath, widely known as KK, was an Indian playback singer famous for his work in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam music. Known for his ability to sing across different music styles, KK is considered one of India’s greatest playback singers.

His full name was Krishnakumar Kunnath and he was born on 23 August 1968 in Delhi to Malayali parents. He was 53 years old when he died on 31 May 2022 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

His father’s name was Mr. C. S. Nair and his mother’s name was Mrs. Kanakavalli. He was married to Jyothy Lakshmi Krishna and had a son and a daughter named Nakul Krishna Kunnath, and Tamara Kunnath.

KK attended Mount St. Mary’s School in New Delhi. He then went to Kirori Mal College in Delhi, where he studied commerce. KK was approximately 165 cm tall, which is about 1.65 meters or 5 feet 5 inches. He had black eyes and black hair.

Death Reason Of KK Singer

On May 31, 2022, KK held a concert at a college festival in Nazrul Mancha, South Kolkata. After the show, while heading back to his hotel in Esplanade, he started feeling unwell and suffered a cardiac arrest.

He collapsed, and despite attempts to revive him at the hotel, they were unsuccessful. KK was taken to Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) around 10:30 PM, where he was pronounced dead.

Singing Career Of Krishnakumar Kunnath

KK faced challenges in establishing his career in the competitive music industry, often singing at hotels to earn a living. He moved to Mumbai in 1994 and gained some recognition by singing in the song “Josh of India,” which was released to support the Indian national team during the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

In 1994, KK shared a demo tape with musicians Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot, and Lesle Lewis. This led to a call from UTV, where he recorded a jingle for a Santogen Suiting advertisement. Over the next four years, KK went on to sing more than 3,500 jingles in 11 different languages.

KK made his Bollywood debut with the song “Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se” from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999, which he saw as a major turning point in his career.

He received six nominations for Filmfare Awards and won the Best Playback Singer – Male award at the 2009 Screen Awards for the song “Khuda Jaane” from the film Bachna Ae Haseeno.

In 2022, he collaborated with filmmaker Srijit Mukherji and lyricist Gulzar on a song for Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga. The song, “Dhoop Paani Bahne De,” was released after his passing.

KK recorded many popular songs in various languages, including Tamil. According to Outlook, his music played a significant role in shaping Tamil film music in the 2000s and became part of Tamil culture.

In 1999, when Sony Music launched in India and was looking to introduce a new artist, KK was chosen to release his debut solo album, Pal, which featured music by Lesle Lewis from the duo Colonial Cousins.

In 2022, KK ranked 30th on Google’s list of the “Top 100 Most Searched Asians.” Additionally, nine of his songs were included in the BBC’s list of the “Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks of All Time.”
