Olaf Scholz is a German politician and has been Germany’s Chancellor since December 8, 2021. He’s a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Before becoming Chancellor, he was Vice-Chancellor and served as the Finance Minister from 2018 to 2021 under Chancellor Angela Merkel in her last government.

Olaf Scholz was born on June 14, 1958, in Osnabrück, a city in Lower Saxony, Germany. He grew up in the Rahlstedt area of Hamburg, where his parents worked in the textile industry.
Olaf has two younger brothers: Jens, an anesthesiologist and CEO of the University Medical Center in Schleswig Holstein, and Ingo, a tech entrepreneur. Olaf is married to Britta Ernst, who is also a politician in the SPD. They used to live in the Altona area of Hamburg but moved to Potsdam in 2018.

Olaf attended Bekassinenau Elementary School in Oldenfelde before transferring to Großlohering Elementary School in Großlohe. After graduating from high school in 1977, he studied law at the University of Hamburg, where he completed a single-stage legal training program.

Political Journey Of Olaf Scholz
Olaf joined the SPD (Social Democratic Party) as a student in 1975, and he got involved with the party’s youth organization, called Jusos. Between 1982 and 1988, he served as the Deputy Federal Chairman of Jusos.
At the age of 40, in 1998, Olaf Scholz was elected to his first political position as a Deputy Member of the Bundestag, representing the Hamburg-Altona area. Scholz was re-elected to the Bundestag in the 2002 German federal election.
Between 2002 and 2004, he was also the General Secretary of the SPD. In 2007, he became the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in Angela Merkel’s first government, taking over from Franz Müntefering.
On August 10, 2020, the SPD leaders decided to nominate Olaf Scholz as their candidate for Chancellor in the 2021 federal election. Later, on November 24, 2021, the SPD, Green Party, and FDP agreed to form a coalition government, naming Scholz as the next Chancellor of Germany.
On December 8, 2021, Olaf Scholz was officially elected Chancellor by the Bundestag, with 395 votes supporting him and 303 against.
In November 2023, Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court required the government to cut 60 billion euros from its budget to avoid exceeding the debt limits set by the constitution.
This created a big challenge for Scholz’s government and played a part in sparking protests in 2023–2024.
