M. M. Lawrence was an Indian politician who belonged to the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM). He was the convenor of the Left Democratic Front in Kerala. From 1980 to 1984, he was a Member of Parliament representing the Idukki constituency.

What Happened To MM Lawrence?

Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M. M. Lawrence passed away on Saturday at the age of 95 at Medical Trust Hospital in Ernakulam. He had been in the hospital for more than a month due to health issues related to his age. Lawrence was a long-time member of the CPM’s central committee and was an important figure in Kerala’s left-wing politics.

The High Court has ordered that the body of the late senior CPM leader M. M. Lawrence be preserved. This decision comes after a petition was filed by his daughter, Asha Lawrence, who opposed the plan to hand the body over to the medical college. The body was scheduled to be given to Ernakulam Medical College at 4 PM today.

M. M. Lawrence was born on June 15, 1929, in Kerala, India, and he was 95 years old when he passed away on 21 September 2024. He was the son of Avira Mathu and Mangalath Mariyam from Mulavukadu in Ernakulam. He was married to Baby, who has passed away. He is survived by his sons M. L. Sajeevan and M. L. Abi, as well as his daughter Asha Lawrence.

He was kicked out of St. Albert’s School for putting the tricolor flag in his pocket. After that, he studied at Munavirul Islam School. He stopped his formal education in 10th grade to focus on politics full-time.

Lawrence worked his way up in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to become a central committee member and later served as the convener of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). 

A Brief About MM Lawrence’s Political Journey

He was part of the party’s central committee until 1998 and served as the convenor of the Left Democratic Front in Kerala. From 1980 to 1984, he was a member of parliament for the Idukki constituency.

After leaving the CPIM central committee, he worked at the local level in Ernakulam district. He was the leader of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and served as the president of the Cochin Port Labour Union.

He was an under-trial prisoner for two years and was later arrested for preventive detention in 1965. Lawrence strongly criticized veteran CPM leader V S Achuthanandan in his biography, highlighting issues of factionalism in the party.

In 1998, he was moved from the central committee to the Kadavanthra area committee due to a report about his involvement with the Save CPM forum. He eventually returned to the state committee and became the General Secretary of CITU.
