Career Journey Of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das
Das joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1980 as part of the Tamil Nadu cadre. During his career in the state government, he held key roles like Commissioner of Commercial Taxes and Principal Secretary of Industries.
Later, he worked with the central government, where he served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Das played a key role in implementing important reforms like demonetization and the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
In May 2017, he was appointed as the Economic Affairs Secretary, where he was in charge of overseeing the government’s economic policies. As Economic Affairs Secretary, Shaktikanta Das was involved in the controversial demonetization of high-value currency notes in November 2016.
After retiring from the IAS, he was appointed to the Fifteenth Finance Commission and became India’s Sherpa to the G20. In December 2018, he was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and resigned from the Finance Commission.
Das was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India by the ACC on December 11, 2018. He took over from Urjit Patel, who had resigned the day before. Das’s term was initially for three years, but it was later extended for another three years in December 2021.
Das was rated “A+” in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards for both 2023 and 2024. He was one of only three central bank governors to receive this top rating.
