Brief About Siddaramaiah’s Political Journey

Siddaramaiah’s political journey began when Nanjunda Swamy, a lawyer in Mysore, noticed him at the district courts after he graduated in law. Swamy encouraged Siddaramaiah to enter politics, and he was elected to the Mysore Taluka.

In 1983, he ran for a seat in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Chamundeshwari constituency on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket. His victory in that election surprised many and brought him recognition in the Old Mysore region.

Siddaramaiah later joined the ruling Janata Party and became the first president of the Kannada Surveillance Committee (Kannada Kavalu Samiti), which was created to ensure Kannada was used as an official language.

In the 1985 mid-term elections, he was re-elected from the same Chamundeshwari constituency and was appointed as the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.

When J. H. Patel became Chief Minister in 1996, Siddaramaiah was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister. However, on July 22, 1999, he was removed from his position as Deputy Chief Minister and was also dropped from the Cabinet.

In 2005, Siddaramaiah had disagreements with H. D. Deve Gowda, which led to his expulsion from the JD(S) party. He considered starting a new regional party called “ABPJD” in Karnataka after leaving JD(S), but decided against it because other regional parties in the state had not lasted.

In the 2023 Karnataka legislative assembly election, Siddaramaiah ran for the Varuna constituency and won, marking his 9th election victory. After this win, he was sworn in as Chief Minister for the second time.
