Swati Maliwal was born on October 15, 1984, in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Her father’s name is Ashok Maliwal, who was an Indian Armed Forces officer, and her mother’s name is Sangita Maliwal.

Swati attended Amity International School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from JSS Academy of Technical Education.

On January 23, 2012, Swati Maliwal married Naveen Jaihind, whom she had met during the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare. Naveen later became a politician with the Aam Aadmi Party. The couple divorced in February 2020.

According to mynetainfo, Rajya Sabha member Swati has total assets worth Rs 19,22,519, as reported in her January 2024 election affidavit. Her income for 2022-23 was over Rs 24 lakh, according to her income tax return.

Brief About Swati’s Political Journey

After finishing her education, Swati Maliwal joined an NGO called “Parivartan,” which was started by Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and others. In this role, she worked on grassroots campaigns across India.

Maliwal became the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) in July 2015, making her one of the youngest to lead the commission.

During her time there, she pushed for the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, of 2015, which allows minors aged 16 to 18 to be tried as for serious crimes.

In April 2018, Swati Maliwal went on a 10-day hunger strike to demand various reforms. She called for laws that would impose the death penalty for those who ra** children, for police recruitment to meet United Nations standards, and for greater police accountability.

In January 2024, Swati Maliwal was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, representing Delhi. On May 13, 2024, Swati Maliwal claimed that she was ass**aulted by Bibhav Kumar, who is the personal assistant to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, at the Chief Minister’s residence.

Maliwal strongly criticized the appointment of Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. In a social media post, Maliwal questioned Atishi’s qualifications and expressed concern about national security, alleging that Atishi’s family had previously supported Afzal Guru.

Maliwal wrote, “Today is a very sad day for Delhi,” highlighting that Atishi’s parents had reportedly tried to save Afzal Guru, who was convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack.
